School Lunch Program - New and Improved!
June 3, 2009
Dear Parents,
We have initiated a pilot lunch program until the end of this year. We have revised our school lunch menu, with significant changes. All efforts are focused on providing fresh, unprocessed foods of the highest quality to our children.
Orit Riter, the lunch program provider, has kept a close eye on our children's eating habits over the year and is aware of their likes and dislikes. We have modified the menu choices below, taking all of this into consideration.
- All High Fructose corn syrup, processed foods and processed sauces will be eliminated from now on.
- All nitrates are eliminated. Hot dogs and deli meats will be nitrate free!
- All red meat of low quality grade will be eliminated and replaced with either ground turkey or chicken.
- Bagged chicken nuggets will be replaced with grilled/roasted free-range chicken or chicken drumsticks.
- The salad bar will be extended to include seasonal vegetables and sprouts with home made salad dressing containing the purest ingredients.
- New!! Baked potato bar - the kids can fill a potato with broccoli, cheese or beans, and have tuna, egg salad, and/or fresh tomatoes on the side.
- Baked French "fries", mashed real potatoes, orzo and basmati white rice will be served for the starch foods
- Baked Ziti, fish sticks, pizza and falafel days will stay.
For the month of June we encourage all children to participate. Children who are not on the lunch program are now able to pay on the day, $4.00 per lunch, or a check can be made out to Orit Riter for $45.00 for the remainder of this school year.
We are looking forward to your feedback and hope to continue this for the 2009-2010 year I’H. Please be aware that this new program is on trial basis only, and will be evaluated based on the number children registered for the school lunch program next year. An added consideration is keeping the cost comparable. We would be able to accomplish this with greater participation.
We hope to continue healthy eating for the 2009-10 year.
