Dear Parents, Welcome back! I am very pleased to have your child in my class this year. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. This year at ASHAR will mark my sixth year of teaching and my second year with ASHAR. I have been fortunate enough to have taught grades 1, 2, 4, and 6. Here is a little information about me. I graduated from SUNY Rockland with an A.A.S. in Computer Operations. Subsequently, I attended On a personal note, I am an avid reader and strive to pass this on to my students. I enjoy cooking, scrapbooking, and spending time with my friends and family. I have a dog named Cooper (I am sure you will hear a lot about him this year) who was introduced to the first grade last year and seems to have become our class mascot. Second grade provides a unique experience where you will notice your child growing by leaps and bounds. As parents, you will be amazed by the academic, social, and emotional growth of your child throughout the year. As you can tell, it’s a big job for both student and the teacher. Therefore, I need all of your support. I am a firm believer that the home is a child’s first school. I look forward to working with you to ensure your child’s successful school year. I believe every child can learn, while recognizing each child is an individual who will understand concepts at different times. There will be different levels of learning taking place at the same time in our room. Please be aware of this and be supportive of your child’s successes, no matter what level of learning they have attained. This year’s curriculum is innovative and includes Everyday Mathematics, the Teachers College Reading and Writing Workshop Model, FOSS Science, and social studies. We are all aware of the importance of good communication skills now and in your child’s future, and so I incorporate writing into all areas of the curriculum. This means we will be writing in science, math, and so on. Beginning writings will most likely be filled with misspellings, but most students can tell you what they meant when they wrote the sentence, paragraph, or story. It is my hope that you will be supportive of these inventive spelling attempts and encourage further writing. Thank you for entrusting your child to me. I promise to do my best everyday to be your child’s companion in learning. If I can help you in any way, please contact me through a note, or call the school at 845-357-1515. The best way to reach me is via e-mail me at the address below (please list you child’s name as the subject). I look forward to a wonderful year together! Ariella Fitzgerald AFitzgerald@ashar.org
