Welcome!

September 2008

Dear Students and Parents,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Stacey Winkler and I will be teaching Social Studies for grades 5, 7, and 8 here at ASHAR. I have earned my Bachelor’s degree in Adolescence Education with a concentration area in Social Studies from the nationally accredited education program at the State University of Oswego. I joined the ASHAR faculty last January and I am thrilled to be back here for the 2008-2009 school year!

I look forward to working with your children as we progress through the exciting world of Social Studies by bringing my excellent organizational and time management skills, a positive attitude, and a willingness to engage students in reaching their true potentials. Throughout the school year, I plan to have students actively engaged in our curriculum by adding activities to the classroom as a method of learning Social Studies and using the technology available to us in the classroom. We recently received money through a grant to purchase a Smart Board. This is a very exciting piece of technology to have in the classroom and I look forward to the energy and knowledge it will bring to our classes. My objective is to provide a classroom environment where every individual feels comfortable to learn and ask questions as they arise, in doing so, I believe this will make for a successful learning environment.

Please be aware that homework is an integral part of the learning process. I believe homework is important because it is a valuable aid in helping students make the most of their experiences in school. I give homework because it is useful in reinforcing what has been learned in class, prepares students for upcoming lessons, teaches responsibility, and helps students develop positive study habits. Students should expect homework most nights and students are expected to do their best job on each assignment. Please encourage your child to use a daily planner to record homework from the homework board nightly. In order to encourage and aid your children in their research skills, students will be assigned out of school projects and presentations throughout the school year, please remember to ask your child if there are any projects going on in social studies throughout the school year. For most projects, I will provide students with an assignment sheet and rubric for grading. I request students to have a separate binder for Social Studies class with a red folder, which should be useful in keeping students organized. Grades will be calculated using homework, quizzes, tests, projects, class participation and attendance.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. The best way to communicate with me is through e-mail swinkler@ashar.org. I look forward to your cooperation throughout the school year.

Sincerely yours,

Stacey Winkler
